Damaged Proof Mint Sets Returned To US Mint

Golden Eagle Coins Tip: The US Mint recently revealed that the damage to the 1999, 2000 and 2001 proof mint set coins are attributed to an experimental chemical used by the Mint containing sulfuric acid. As of June 2002, the US Mint rescinded the sales to the set aside coins and offered a refund for the 16,000 sets. Not all of the Proof Mint sets from 2000 and 2001 were affected by the sulfuric acid wash. The Proof Mint sets unaffected from those years are the 2000-S and the 2001-S versions.
