Commemorative Proof Coins

Golden Eagle Coins Tip: The coins found in proof sets start out like most other coins. A sculptor-engraver creates a three dimensional version out of plaster, which is used to create a steel die. Then, proof coins undergo a special process which separates these coins from general circulation coins. The dies receive a special finish, giving the proof coins a two-tone surface. The background of the coins become mirror-like and the image takes on a frosted appearance. The resultant coin has a striking raised detail achieved by striking the coin twice through a low speed coin press. The final touch includes packaging the coins in acrylic cases to display and preserve the coins.
